Kristen Stewart is swapping sparkling vampires for accused terrorists and the result is one of the potential buzziest films set to play the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
Stewart will play a soldier sent to work at Guantanamo Bay in "Camp X-Ray" – one of dozens of films selected for fest and an announced on Wednesday.
This first still photo for "Camp" shows Stewart in fatigues, wearing an expression that's all business. In the film — which has a bit of a "Zero Dark Thirty" vibe — Stewart befriends a Muslim inmate in the controversial detention camp. It's her latest attempt to break away from the action-fantasy films where she's seen her biggest success (i.e., the "Twilight" series and "Snow White and the Huntsman") and try her hand at serious acting.
Here are five other films that have us all excited to see at the fest in Park City, Utah, from Jan. 16 to 26:
1. "Life After Beth"
The delightful Aubrey Plaza stars in this horror-comedy opposite Dane DeHaan. She plays his beloved girlfriend who dies suddenly and returns as a zombie. John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Cheryl Hines, and Paul Reiser also appear.
2. "The Skeleton Twins"
"SNL" alums Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig star in this film about estranged twins Maggie and Milo who unintentionally reunite (by coincidentally cheating death on the same day). Needless to say their journey lies in realizing how much they need each other. The cast is filled out by Luke Wilson, Ty Burrell, Boyd Holbrook, and Joanna Gleason.
3. "Low Down"
If for the talented and eclectic cast alone, this sobering feature looks on track to be a winner — starring John Hawkes, Elle Fanning, Glenn Close, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, and Flea (yes, the superawesome Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist). Based on Amy Jo Albany's memoir of the same name, the story revolves around a girl's difficulty growing up in the '70s with her drug-addicted musician father.
4. "Cold in July"
Cable television star Michael C. Hall ("Dexter," "Six Feet Under") may have found his big-screen breakout vehicle, starring in this film about a Texas man who spirals into a world of violence and depravity after he kills a home intruder. Don Johnson, Sam Shepard, Vinessa Shaw, Nick Damici, and Wyatt Russell also appear.
5. "God's Pocket"
John Slattery ("Mad Men") makes his feature-film directorial debut with a drama about the complications surrounding a man's "accidental" death and his mother's search for answers. With a cast that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Richard Jenkins, "Mad Men" co-star Christina Hendricks, and John Turturro, we are expecting good things from Slattery's turn at the helm.
